NEW DELHI – The Naga Students’ Union, Delhi (NSUD) has said it will not endorse, attend or take part in any move to form a separate Naga organisation in the national capital, warning that such efforts could fracture the community’s unity.

In a press release dated Nov. 3, the union said its House of Representatives, at a meeting on Oct. 31, made “a resolute affirmation not to endorse, encourage, or support the formation of any separate Naga organisation, association, forum, or similar body in Delhi”.

The NSUD and its federating units have also “resolved not to attend any invitation for the creation of any such organisation, nor to participate in the same in any manner whatsoever”, the release said.

The statement does not name any group or proposal, or say who sent the invitations it refers to. It was issued in the name of the union and does not carry the name of any office-bearer.

Why NSUD opposes a separate Naga organisation

The union said the decision came “following due deliberation across multiple forums”, with the NSUD and its federating units resolving to “reaffirm and strengthen the unity of the Naga community in Delhi” in keeping with its motto, “Strength in Unity”.

It said it “respectfully discourages” any member or group within the Naga community in Delhi from starting or pursuing a separate union, council, forum or similar body. Also Read Naga Students’ Organization Condemns Reported Drone Attacks, Calls for Investigation

“Such endeavours risk fracturing the collective unity and cohesion that the Nagas Students’ Union, Delhi has long strived to uphold,” the release said.

The union sought “the understanding, cooperation, and support of all concerned” in upholding its position, “in the larger interest of preserving our collective Naga identity, unity, and integrity in Delhi”.

Appeal for restraint

“At a time when unity and solidarity are of paramount importance, the Union appeals to every member of the Naga community in Delhi to exercise wisdom, restraint, and a spirit of cooperation in all matters concerning our collective interests,” the statement said.

The NSUD said it remained “steadfast in its responsibility towards the welfare and aspirations of Naga students and residents in Delhi”.

About the NSUD

The NSUD was formed in 1963 and works from Nagaland House on Abdul Kalam Road in New Delhi. It is the apex body of Naga students in the capital, with tribe-based student unions as its federating units. It organises the annual Nagas’ Meet in Delhi.

Last month, the union presented a nine-point charter at the Press Club of India seeking a National Investigation Agency probe into violence against Naga civilians in Manipur, NorthEast Now reported on Oct. 23.
